A bespoke Varsity jacket fit for a star, George Washington grad Tiny Lo'.
Creating a jacket for Lauryn was a project and a journey of learning and collaboration. Every step was a testament to our shared vision, from sourcing materials to pattern development. Your input and feedback were invaluable, Lauryn, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be your partner in this.
The first step was to find references to inspire us. We carefully selected the collar from a jacket we bought from a vintage shop close to our area and took the wrist cuffs from that jacket. However, we didn't stop there. We extended the cuff and paired it with a slightly longer sleeve of heavy cow leather for a very subtle ballooning silhouette. This also caused the sleeves to nipple at the wrist, which was an excellent, unexpected detail. We added more protracted shoulders and a cropped torso to compliment the sleeves for the body. Getting a digital flat of the jackets shaped welcomed the fun part, adding Lauryn's style. Every detail was meticulously chosen to ensure your jacket is truly one-of-a-kind.
To create a jacket that genuinely represents Lauryn and her school, we needed a symbol that embodied femininity while also being a perfect fit for the school's identity. After much consideration, we landed on a star. However, bringing this star pattern to life on the sleeves proved challenging. Initially, we explored overlapping the stars, but the thickness of the leather made this unfeasible. We also considered creating a custom pattern to ensure the stars fit together evenly, but the pointed appendages of the star shape presented obstacles. With the help of Lauryn and our talented seamstress, we ultimately settled on a design that hinted at growth in the size of the stars and created a sense of dimension.
When it came to choosing a color palette for Lauryn's jacket, we wanted to make sure it not only reflected her unique personality but also her school spirit. After considering a range of options, we settled on a combination of colors that perfectly captures Lauryn's individuality and the ethos of her school. Incorporating these hues into the jacket's design created a genuinely personalized garment for Lauryn.
Then, it was time for production. Before our seamstress could start on the jacket's construction, Lauryn and I had to cut the stars out of the assortment of goat hide we found for the actual star patches. Well, we had to cut the stars, then bake them in the oven, and lastly, we had to remove the shine with acetone. We handed the material off to our seamstress, and our job was done. The result is a jacket that perfectly captures Lauryn's star quality.
